CORI Teacher Training Module Grades 3-5

Welcome to Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) professional development. As shown in this website, CORI is a research-based program designed to improve your students’ reading comprehension, to engage your students in literacy, and to enable your students to become self-motivated readers.

The objective of CORI in the classroom is to increase the amount of engaged reading. Engaged reading refers to reading strategically (using background knowledge, questioning, organizing graphically, summarizing, and other strategies), with motivational goals of learning from text, interacting with other students to learn, experiencing hands-on activities, and gaining conceptual understanding of science through reading.

Whether you are a teacher, school administrator, or district supervisor, you can bring CORI to your school by purchasing the CORI Teacher Training Module Grades 3- 5. Developed by John T. Guthrie, Ph. D. and Jennifer A. McPeake, this module provides an introduction to Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction. This module is a two-week condensed version of the full CORI 12-week framework. It includes 10 days of detailed CORI lesson plans covering five motivations and two reading strategies, a teacher’s reflection journal, and a CORI unit builder.

During this 2-week module, teachers implement CORI lessons and reflect on motivation, reading strategies (questioning and organizing graphically), and science learning (bird survival). After implementing these introductory lessons, the CORI unit builder provides teachers with the planning and organizational charts to develop their own CORI units.
